I’ve been in a bit of a creative rut lately, is there really such a thing? More of a prolonged frustration, I think I’ve maybe been putting too much of my energy into work and stressing over trivial things. I am going to try and make more of a concerted effort to begin doing things outside of filmmaking. Writing music again, stencil/painting, etc…It’s not that I am finding...

It’s a cool Sunday afternoon, good time to start reposting on this thing. I know it’s been a good while.
I spent the last week back up in DC shooting some incredible stories for a campaign for Washington Hospital Center. All were testimonial/documentary based, which will be intercut with some really great b-roll. We did 6 stories total, all of which I’m being tasked with...

It’s been an interesting month or so since I officially began working at DVA. In that time I’ve been directly involved in a number of jobs both corporate and non-corporate.
I recently spent a week in DC shooting some footage for Medstar Health, which operates a string of hospitals in the DC/Baltimore area. The shoot included me going up in a helicopter to shoot aerials, which I had a...

It’s pretty soft, but I was stoked nonetheless to capture this during a timelapse I burned over the weekend.

Change
Long time no post. A lot has happened to me in the last month that has somewhat prevented me from making any kind of updates.
First and foremost I got a new job, I’m now an in-house shooter and editor for a great production company here in Jacksonville called DVA. I was a recent hire along with my good friends Gus Cooper and Stephen Aymond. I really like the creative vibe around here,...

Here’s the first episode of our documentary series The Loose Ends. The first episode is a profile piece on Defeater and was shot/finished back in November. Derek was a genuinely great guy and was great to interview. Thanks again to the band and Bridge Nine for helping get all of this set up.

Cap.
This will be the first of probably 2 additional posts regarding my next documentary project, given the legal grey area that it lands on. It’s in the planning/writing stage and I’m still trying to figure out some things logistically, but this kind of project is something I have been wanting to do since I picked up a camera.
That’s about it for now.
Influence.
This blew me away. The cinematography, the editing, the storytelling and subject matter, everything. This is the kind of work I aspire to make.

Non-photographic post, apologies. Just wanted to thank everyone for the positive words and constructive critiquing of my reel, it’s my first and I’m still really proud of it even after watching it for about the 200th time.
A few things that were put on the back burner this past year will hopefully see the light of day on here, namely a few boards/concept art for two conceptual...

Cinematography Reel 2011
This is my first cinematography reel. I was going back and forth between whether to include supers or not, being that I edited a great deal of what is on this reel. Ultimately I decided that a lower third would distract the viewer from the content as a whole. I may change my mind on this, but for now I think I’ll keep it as is and present a lower third version to prospective clients.

About every 3 months or so I revisit this piece just to remind myself of why I am pursuing filmmaking as a career. Floors me every time.

Two films that I am very interested in seeing: “Shame” and “Tyrannosaur”. Films that explore any facet of the human condition, no matter how dark, fascinate me.

Undesirables
This will be a long post, but I feel everyone should read it. There was recently an article in the Times Union that somewhat outlined a new initiative being planned to solve Jacksonville’s homeless issue, particularly those that occupy Hemming Plaza.
You can read the article here.

Moods
I don’t usually like putting out incomplete work, but I wanted to give an update on the doc piece I’ve been working on centering on the Jacksonville arts community. This is a short montage I cut together that features some of what I’ve shot thus-far. I cut it to some place holder music that will give you an idea about the atmosphere I’m hoping to create, which I suppose...

My next purchase for the 7D. Either this or some kind of support rig. Somewhat torn between the two.

These are several stills from an art show I shot recently with my buddy Gus Cooper. The show featured the work of local Jax artists Shaun Thurston and Squid Dust aka Clay Doran.

Things have been very busy/hectic work wise. Not a lot of room for inspiration or creativity on my part lately. At any rate, in the spirit of inspiration I figured I’d post three videos that really had an impact on me a few years ago when the whole DSLR filmmaking movement was just breaking. All courtesy of Gnarly Bay, which is a production company out of Rhode Island. They’re simple...

This was another promo spot I did with Gus Cooper, Sean Shea and the FSB crew. Shot the majority of it handheld, it served as the intro to a series that featured bands performing at Burro Bar here in Jax.

This was a viral/music video that I shot back in April/May, sometime around then. My friend Gus Cooper directed and it was DP’d by my buddy Sean Shea. I had a lot of fun on this and it turned out really well.

Noir
I began shooting for the DVI art walk project tonight, ran into a lot of old friends from UNF, met some new folks as well. I used a slider for the majority of the exterior shots, got some decent results, some not so great. I’m still unsure how I feel about it all, but here are a few screen grabs nonetheless. Due to timing issues I had to cut the evening early so I’ll be back out next...

Never alone.
This is a cut from Call to Preserve’s set at Carly Fest this year, it was their last time playing in Jacksonville and they killed it. I managed to find time to finally get an edit out last night while converting footage from the job I worked on in Boston this past week.
Props again to Faith Bennett and Tommy LaFemina for helping me shoot these sets.

This is a cut from several full sets I filmed at Carly Fest this year. Carly Fest is a cancer benefit that takes place annually in Jacksonville, benefiting the Nicki Leach Foundation and is in memory of Carly Driscoll, a young woman who passed away from a rare form of cancer last year. This year’s lineup included Foundation, Kids Like Us, The Red Baron, Call to Preserve and Round for Round.
