Alright, time for a big post. It’s been a good while since I began work on an experimental piece, well over a year in fact, the last one I did was the “eastern shore” diptych installation that featured my lovely wife Jenny.

For sometime now I’ve wanted to make a piece that would visually be akin to the work of street photographers such as Gary Winogrand and David Gibson. The idea I have is to make a very clean B&W piece that would basically paint a picture of the downtown area in a documentary yet very artful style. No face to face interviews, just very visceral photography, VO and music.

Initially, I wanted the main focal point of the piece to be Downtown Jax’s Art Walk, and how it has brought both interest and a breath of fresh air to an urban area that had been slowly dying before 2005. With that said, I’m beginning to think about either making a series of these videos on various subjects or one large piece centering on the reformation and future of downtown Jacksonville.

Stylistically, I want the majority of the video to be shot at 23.98 at 60 frames for slow motion, obviously ramping when needed. I have several shots in my head though where I really think I’d be able to utilize Twixtor, a plugin I use in After Effects to dramatically slow down the time and duration of clips. When done right your final results will somewhat resemble the effect you would achieve using a Phantom camera.

A little Twixtor test I did a while back.

I’m still fleshing out ideas at this point in time, several shots are going to be somewhat difficult to pull off, particularly one of that I have in mind for the Mathews Bridge, a time-lapse sequence that would somewhat resemble this angle.

That’s all for now, more to come soon.
